Hi

Does anyone know where you can get cheap car insurance for a 17 year old who has just passed his driving test ?

The quotes we have are ridiculously high. The car is worth about 300 and the insurance is over 2000.
I have tried all the comparison sites as well as ringing companies direct.

He is going to do his Pass Plus which I understand will help to reduce costs a bit, but we would appreciate any advice on where to find cheaper insurance.

Thanks for your help

Very tricky the problem is that a high percentage of young drivers, especially lads, hit things! If he can get a group 1 car then that will help. It may be worth being a named driver for a year or two but I think the insurers are pretty well harsh on that one too.
His car may be worth 300, but it's the damage he can do in that car to other vehicles and people that puts the costs up.

I would be very surprised if you got insurance for much less than 1800, and would expect it to be around 2000.

What sort of car has he got? The lower cc the better.

Thanks for your answers
The car is a Rover 211 which only has an 1100 engine.

I do understand about the damage that can be done and I also understand that he is young and inexperienced. I just thought someone might know somewhere that was a bit cheaper.

We got a quote from endsleigh today and it was just under 1700 which is the best yet. I think Pass Plus is the way forward which will give him a discount of between 20% and 30% which will be better still.

Thanks again for your help
Try e car. I have only been driving for a while and I was getting quotes for 1,200 I found e car when I was surfing the net and they have done it for just under 600.
I had a similar issue with my 17 year old on a 1400 corsa.. quoted about 1800.
In the end i went to direct line insured the car myself for 650 with him as a named driver where he still earns his no claims bonus. When he is 20 the insurance will be cheaper as he will have 3 years no claims in HIS name. Sexual discrimination occours!! My daughter same car, aged 17 quoted 800!!!!
If you follow that route and your son makes a claim, the insurance company will ask a lot of questions to determine exactly who is the main driver.

They are not stupid and are really clamping down on this fraud. Any doubts and they will not pay up.

Yes - I have already looked into insuring it myself and having him as named driver but as I already have insurance on my own car this was frowned upon as it is obvious that my son would be the named driver.

I will continue with my quest! He has booked his pass plus now so that should help.

* sorry I meant the main driver
Our son is 17 and they refused to put him on either my insurance (Mondeo estate 2.0 ) or my wifes (Fiesta 1.4) I was quite pleased really as I only pay 238 fully comp with protected bonus and my wife pays 219 same cover.
Now there's one advantage of being middle age.

Seriously though my first car nsurance in 1980 when I ws 17 was 183 an amount equivalent to sy 1000 now
The co-op insurance, CIS, was recommended by the driving instructor and has proved best for several young males we know.
Good luck.
try www.quinn-direct.com they done my sons he is 17 on a provisional for a 16 fiesta si for 1300
