New Laptop Taking A Long Time To Shut Down - Any Suggestions?

a new (well not brand new but described as 'manufacturer refurbished') laptop is taking longer than expected to shut down, installing updates every time it shuts down. Can anyone suggest why this might be and provide any remedies? Do I need to change any settings? thanks in advance.

Once Windows (I'm assuming that) has picked up and installed all the updates, then shutdown should become quicker.

Patience is all I can say, although you could restrict updates to important ones if you like, but I wouldn't bother.

Sometimes there can be many Windows updates to download, and often once it has downloaded one set and rebooted another set are downloaded.

Once this has happened a few times the updates should stop.

There is a Windows Updates option on the Windows menu and if you select that and ask it to "search for updates" it should at last say "Windows is up to date" or words to that effect.

It shouldn't be installing updates "every time it shuts down". My bet it that the same updates are being installed over and over again. Check this by going Control Panel/System & Security/Windows Update; click on "View Update History", see if there are repetitious updates listed, then "Troubleshoot problems......"; this will open a Help window. Try the "Fixit" programme.

methyl's right - it seems to be Microsoft Office updates causing the problem.

Click to open Windows Update.

Do one of the following:

Click the link that tells you important updates are available if you have important updates to hide.

Click the link that tells you optional updates are available if you have optional updates to hide.

Select any update that you want to hide, right-click it, and then click Hide update. Do this for each update you want to hide.

Click OK.

I did this this afternoon and it solved the problem.

Thanks all. I will follow some of your tips next time I log on (computer is at the relative's who I bought it for). Methyl - it uses Windows 7 and does not have MS Office (only the starter pack which comes free).
