i have never smoked, but i have always found the smell disgusting. To the point where if i have been out to a pub or club when i get home i gotta wash my hair and shower because i find it that offensive.

Well done! You have reached enlightenment, you now know how bad you smell when you're a smoker. It's not your nose, all smokers smell bad some worse than others, I don't think they believe until they give up and sniff it when their nose starts working again just like you have!
yes, when i packed in smoking i couldn't stand the smell, every time i went to the pub or even standing at the bus stop and someone lit up i coulld smell it really strong! half the time it made me feel like ohh i'd love to have a fag again but half the time again i thought THINK of the money your'e saving plus no more coughing in the night! even now after 2 years my nose still reacts to the smell, it takes time but with willpower you'll get there, good luck.
well done i gave up a forty a day habbit almost a year ago now but i'm really a bad x smoker i tell complet strangers how bad they smell, it's disgusting and i can't believe that i use to smell like that. good luck
I gave up 60 a day on 30/4/04 and can now smell a lighted fag at about 500 yards - sometimes before I even see the person smoking it! But it's people's SKIN I notice as much as the smell. I used to be grey, lined and a bit spotty sometimes (many many years of smoking), and all that's gone now. I feel and look much better. Pink and fresh!
Yes. no offence to smokers at all. But I gave up and now if I go out my hair absoultely reeks and I have to have a shower when I get home. I never knew how much I must have stank before. So glad I gave up.

Good question and very, very comforting answers to the likes of me who have never smoked but have had to endure the stink of others. I wonder how many people read this question and think how wonderful it is that some people who have previously disregarded others comfort have now crossed the divide.

Well done you.

What a brilliant thread. Yes smoking is disgusting. When I met my husband he smoked and I put up with the stench because he was more important to me than the smell but one evening I was in the pub with him, dabbed my fingers in the ashtray and rubbed the grey ash behind my ears and asked him to smell my new perfume. He said I stank and it that it was awful, so told him that's what he smelt like all the time. It worked and he hasn't smoked since, some 16 years. Sometimes it pays to be cruel to be kind, and now he's the first one to complain if we go anywhere smoky. Roll on the ban next year.

Me and my partner gave up 4 years ago and now are really bad ex-smokers. neither of us can understand how we inflicted our habit on non-smokers or how on earth non smokers put up with us. We noticed how after a short while food tasted really good, and how you become attuned to the smell of ciggie smoke (500 yds Rog? I can smell it coming from a car on the motorway!)

I get really irritated at bus stops and shopping centres if someone is smoking in front of me, so I'd just like to apologise to all you people who have never smoked, for what you have had to put up with from me!

My mum and gran smoke heavily but if they visit me, they smoke outside, no matter what the weather - aren't i 'orrible?!!
