corona and lime

When i buy corona in the pub i always get asked if i want a piece of lime in it. I recently heard that this was done in other countries to stop flies from getting in it! just wondered if anybody else new if it was true?

Legend (urban or not) has it that the slice of lime came about in Mexico as a way to keep flies out of the bottle. I'm not mean enough to say that the fact that flies like dead things has relevance here, but there are some who would make that connection. Actually, I don't mind Corona too much. I find it thin, sweet, with no mouth feel and an odd aftertaste, but when tasted ice cold on a hot afternoon it can satisfy. I don't go out of my way for it, but I won't turn it down.
