I'm on a pay monthly contract with my phone company for a period of 18 months. I've been on the contract for about 8 or 9 months now. I'm looking to change. Can you cancel your contract and move to another company or do i have to see out the whole 18 months

Which company is it? What does the terms and conditions of the contract say?

Normally you have to stay or pay a big penalty to be released.

Otherwise, it's pointless having an 18 month contract.
In my experience, they usually ask that you pay them the cost of the remaining months line rental. so if its an 18 mth contract, and ou have been with them for 8 mths then they will ask that you pay them 10 x the cost of your monthly line rental. as Ethel says, theirs no point having a fixed contract otherwise. That has been my experience with 3, o2 and vodafone (im very fickle with technology!)
