Being an electric guitarist, it just occured to me, you know those domestic smoke alarms? Well, they obviously have a loud little amp in there and a tweeter. I wonder if an electronics whiz could explain how to bridge in a quarter inch jack socket to connect a guitar; no prizes for tone but what an interesting sound.

Not sure about this but have you tried www.smokeyamps.com ? Similar idea but a fantastic sound and not too expensive. Will also double up as a 'fuzz' box.

Smoke alarms don't have tweeters, they have a piezo-electric sounder element which is designed to work very efficiently (loud) at one particular frequency, it would not work well with frequencies outside its working range.

Thanks for the answers. The Smokeyamps is something I can go back to time and again e.g. loads of links, Ta. Yes qapmoc, I think I can understand what you're saying but I'm intrigued to hear the effect. Perhaps I'd have to play everything in G Sharp or something for the piezo to respond at all, but that wouldn't do realy. In that case, connecting a two or even one inch speaker may solve the c.p.s. prob.

Thanks again, I'd still like to know how to go about joining a jack socket, I've even got a soldering iron!
