ps2 disc read error

my ps2 is showing a regular "disc read error" the discs themselves are okay so i assume prob is with lens, i couldnt get it going until i decided to try a dvd film -and that worked, i then put in a ps2 game and that worked aswell - any other suggestions/tips that might help? (i tried 2 pieces of tape on discs but that had no effect)- is the lens permamtly damaged or just needs a clean?

I had a similar problem but with an xbox: games kept failing with "dirty disc" errors but DVDs played fine. I bought a replacement DVD drive from eBay (the seller was gameconsolehk perhaps he sells replacement PS2 parts). I found that the lens cleaner was pretty rubbish.
