Garden Wall

If someone wanted to render and plaster a garden wall that faces their property but is not owned by them would you have to get the owners permission or can you just go ahead and do it ?

I would ask them out of courtest - is it your side of a neighbour's wall?

Yes, it's still their wall; no matter where it is, or which way it faces.

Boxtops it is our wall and they just went ahead and did it, didn't even ask. But wasn't sure if they were obliged to or not, I thought it common courtesy to at least mention it but they didn't. I definitely won't fall out with them over it as that would be silly but I must say I wasn't overly pleased they didn't even mention it before doing it. I do wonder now though who is supposed to upkeep the plasterwork on their side.

Ah, so it's YOUR wall, and they are plastering? Sorry, I had it the other way around.
Same thing applies though.... common courtesy.......... notwithstanding the legal position of interfering with someone's property.

I think you're wise to keep out of it for good, neighbourly reasons. One thing only comes to mind though. Highly unlikely, but, if any render comes off and injures someone (silly I know, but possible), then do make it clear that you are not liable just because it's your wall.

I'm not a lawyer, but perhaps a friendly word just to say you are aware of the work, and you're fine with it, but from now on, the render is their responsibility. Things like this keep lawyers happy for hours :o)

Agree with TB - I thought it was someone else's wall that you were planning to render.

Thank you. I was trying to be unbiased with my post to see what people said but I will definitely do what builder said and make it known that they are liable, the only problem I see is that I think they are doing the place up to sell on - not sure but then I suppose I would just pass on that information to the buyer should that occur. Thanks for your help.

You could just pull the wall down and replace it without informing them and see how they like it
