Supermarket Price Claims

Yesterday I did an on-line shop with Tesco's who claim to be as cheap as Asda or Sainsbury's or they refund the difference, Today I received an email from Tesco saying "We are pleased to tell you that by shopping with us you have saved £1.87p" - this is fine except I have just seen a tv advert for Asda who claim "We will not only match the price of other supermarkets but we Guarantee to beat their price by at least 10 percent" now they cannot possibly both be correct so why do trading standards let them get away with these false and misleading claims?

I think they refer to the price of specific items and not across the board.Very misleading and bordering on dishonesty
It's not across the board, it's a specific basket of stuff....
Well I can get the Tesco one because it depends what you buy as to what the saving was. I started to read the Asda T and C for their price guarantee and lost the will to live so I gave up. Anything that complex must have a million get out clauses.
You need to inspect the small print for the specifics of these "price promises".
Tesco's one might have said "By shopping with other supermarkets you would have saved 50p" so they give you a 50p voucher to use, normally within a week or two. Perhaps Asda would have given you a 55p voucher (ie the 50p + 10%). I don't see a problem with this.

In reply to the first couple of answers both Tesco and Asda state that the price promise includes "own brands" and "special offers"
Sainsbury's does a similar thing, but on branded items only.

It's good to know you can shop anywhere you like and still get a guarantee that it'll be cheaper than anywhere else.
I can't be bothered to even check. The savings is usually only a couple of pounds, if that.
On one of my shops at Tesco I got an email telling me I'd have got the stuff £9.66 cheaper elsewhere!!
Blimey....was it the bottles of gin? :-)
