theshedman, Yes that is exactly the case. We were told never to take a Saudi taxi as if there was a crash then you as passenger would be held to blame. The argument is that you ordered the taxi so it is your fault it was in the place where Allah had willed an accident to happen. Our company had its own taxis which we were told to always use as the ordinary ones had no insurance.
I was in a company taxi on the way to the airport to fly home when a police car came through red lights and hit us side on. I threw 200 riyals at the taxi driver and ran out of the taxi and to to the check in desk and checked in for my flight. If the police had decided to argue the case I would have been arrested as they would have said it was my fault even though I was in the back seat. Thank God it happened just outside the terminal entrance.

Hi Eddies, we often had company car to pick us up from airport if we had a long wait for flight to UK. Then we would either stay at company offices or he would take us to hotel. Been to many countries around the world but never come across anywhere where they drive as badly. On a few occasions when the call to prayer came the cars would just stop and the drivers would get out for prayers. I used to drive out there but just not around Jeddah. We did have to get Saudi driving licences and take a sort of test driving around their little driving school with all the signs and roads etc. When each of us went it depended on who was working in their office as to how much we were charged, bit of money going in back pocket. Some of the boys were being asked for 250 riyals and others up to 750. Got too old for all that these days lol.

Boxy, I live in France, anybody who carries breathalysers here either managed to find some before the law was abandoned and just happens to have them int their car, or is a tourist who was conned into buying them on the ferry. If you told a French person that they have to carry a breathalyser they would look at you in disbelief. They are virtually unobtainable, except on the internet.
