Hello, can anyone tell me why supermarkets such as tesco's/sainsbury's etc advertise 'WE OPEN 24 HOURS' but then give their opening times such as mon-fri 8am-10pm, sat/sun 9am-4pm. That's not being open 24 hours???

Have you read the opening times correctly? Our Tesco opens at 8am on a Monday through till 10pm on a Saturday then reopens on a Sunday 10am - 4pm (opens at 9.30am for half hour browsing before staff are actually allowed to serve customers at 10am). They are only allowed to open for six hours on a Sunday due to trading laws.

What i mean is, is why don't they open for 24 hours a day, if it says 'Opens 24 hours'. That would mean that whatever time you get there, they should be open? But they're not???
And why, if a shop is open 24 hours, does it have locks on the doors?

Tesco IS open whatever time you get there (during the week at least). If you turn up at 3:47am, they are open. Except for the period 10:00pm Saturday to 8:00am monday when they are only allowed by law to trade for 6 hours on sunday. I'm not sure whey they don't open till midnight saturday and reopen at just turned minight on Sunday.

The sign would look a bit daft with 'WE OPEN 24 HOURS EXCEPT FOT THE WEEKEND WHEN WE CLOSE AT 10:00PM SATURDAY AND ARE OPEN 6 HOURS SUNDAY BEFORE REOPENING 8:00AM MONDAY' on it!

Locks on doors?

By law they have to close on Easter Sunday, and may have to close in an emergency at other times.

And in some dodgy areas I guess they keep them locked at night and have someone to let customers in/out.

I've been at a supermarket in the small hours, it was great, hardly a soul there, I decided to do the weeks shopping there and then, got round in 10 Minutes!!

you are not getting my point. At my local tesco on the large lit up sign it says 'OPEN 24 HOURS' but underneath it states opening times as 8am - 10pm mon-sat, 10 - 4 sunday.

How can they advertise it being open 24 hours when it clearly isn't. Now do you see my point, i can't make it any clearer. if i did go down there at 3.47am it would be closed, thanks to that guy for your answer.

I don't think anyone's missed your point. As thelewisgang says, they're open from 8am Monday until 10pm Saturday. So that is 24 hours a day during those days. And as Sammy Snake says, by law that can't apply on Sundays.
