^Although if you read any of Michael Moore's books (or watch the films), you'll discover that not all US citizens are happy about their constitutional right to bear arms.

Perhaps even more difficult to resolve (but no less interesting) would be to know of the total how many of those guns were unfortunately pointed in the wrong direction when they went off.

No need for apologies, Wharton. It was a serious post in that it would seem that no tally of deaths is sufficient to prompt the US general public to have a serious debate about proper gun control.

I have seen at least one of Moores documentaries - maybe the one about Columbine. At least one striking fact, to me at least, was the comment that there are more guns per head in Canada than there are in the US - and yet Canada's death toll through guns - murders, accidents, what have you - is just a fraction of those in the US.

I just think stories like this one are very sad.

There are a number of Americans who also seem to frame the guns debate as their way of defending themselves against the Government. This is laughable for two reasons: firstly, they seem not to have noticed the US government's ability to launch drone strikes from miles away, so that in the highly unlikely event of People v. Government, the Government has resources that no amount of small arms fire will be able to deal with or even scratch. Secondly... have they noticed how bad the US Government seems to be at agreeing to anything anyway? It's hardly worth worrying about a threat to its own people when they can't even sort out a simple Budget argument without messing everything up and going into "shutdown".

The remainder of the arguments, about defending yourself etc., fall down because guns clearly don't defend anyone that well. The very high death count is testament to that. Oh well. It's an argument that will never be taken seriously.

A lot of things have changed in my lifetime I would have thought 'never would'. One can never tell. Public opinion moves and suddenly flips. Never say never ?
