How many hours rest do you legally have to have inbetween shifts, ie following a late shift with an early?

i used to work at asda when a student and their policy was 13 hours between shifts. think this is countrywide but not 100%.

I,m a train driver, my minimum hours between shifts is 12 hours.


in the N.H.S. most are minimum of 8 hours, so therefore it seems to vary from job to job, tho agree with pickle on the working directive.

No not now, Ive changed jobs, but evidently there did used to be. Cheers guys.

The best place for anyone to look for answers to this is on the DTI (Dept of Trade and Industry) website.


I believe it is calculated over a two week period. So if u dont get your full allowance between shifts one week but u get more the second week then this will average out within the required limits. (unfortunately).



I work for Royal Mail and the policy is 10 hours between shifts.
