job application - sick days question

a question being asked on a job application form is asking me how many days sick i had in the previous year, is this allowed? i have never seen a question like that before

seen it on many applications in my time - they cannot use it against your application if memory serves.

Don't know, but when providing references for our employees who are changing jobs we are often asked to provide this information.

I'm employed by a local authority and sick absence is standard for both application forms and interviews. A poor record would prevent person being offered post.
