Did Beethoven remove the legs of his piano?

Does anyone know if it's true that when Beethoven became deaf he cut the legs off his piano so that he could feel the vibrations of his playing more intensely?

I have heard this story a number of times over the years, but my daughter's music teacher recently told her this was rubbish. I would love to know the truth!
