How to get autographs?

I've seen many addresses that can be used to get actors autographs, but do you have to send them a picture to sign? And how reliable are they at sending them back to you?

Once was to an astronaut, when I was a child, and he sent me back a (mass-produced) glossy photo-print with a preprinted signature. That was more than enough to make me happy, though!! If you want such a print, then you shouldn't have to send a picture to them, yourself. They have a bunch of those things printed up for their fans, at the stars' own expense. However, if you want a *real* signature, then it might grab their attention better if you send in a picture for them to sign. Make sure that it isn't a valuable picture, though, because you might never see it again! I also wrote to Madonna in 1984 but got nothing in return. So, I had a 50% success rate! It probably depends on how popular they currently are, and thus how much downtime they have to devote to fan mail. I know that stars will usually happily sign items to be auctioned off for charity, but they are probably presented with those items by their "agents," not by the general public. Anyway, good luck!!!
eBay do a good range of authenticated (ie pictures with a cerificate of authenticity: COA) autographs of a lot of the modern "stars". This maybe better than writing directly as you may end up with a mass produced number (as above). Having said that, my sister wrote to Alec Guiness back in the early 80s and got a genuine picture back.
