Gears on a Ford Focus

Can anyone stop me being ripped off by a garage?

I have a 1.8 Zetec, 2000 Y reg. Yesterday evening I got to a junction and found that I couldn't get into 1st gear with the engine switched on but it was no problem with the ignition off. No further probelms and I got home OK. This morning I couldn't get 1st agin with the engine running. OK with the engine off. Had to call out the garage who say that they haven't come across this before. Has anyone any idea what it may be and how much it might cost?

It looks like you need a new clutch for your ford focus and the price fitted should be no more than �400.

Thanks for this. I managed to track down a Ford Mechanic and explain the problem to him. He had a look and confirmed that the Hydraulics in the gearbox had gone. I've had it replaced now and everythin g is OK. Wasn't too expensive either.
