For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The American alligator is actually called the 'alligator mississippiensis', though this is probably a reference to the state rather than the river. According to Collier's Encyclopedia (American) they are found "in coastal plains from North Carolina to Texas." Clearly, the end-part/delta of the Mississippi River flows through a coastal plain, so I've no doubt that the alligators are found there. I doubt, though, that one would find them in St Louis, say!
