all the definitions on the web talk about hot weather, so it's nothing to do with flags on poles, it's flagstones

You'd think it would mean very windy.
I thought cracking the flags meant it was very windy. But I could be wrong.
Cracking the flagstones, I see. Hot then.
I'd heard of cracking the pavement (meaning hot), but I guess that's just a modernisation of cracking the flagstones.
Here in the NW it means it's hot weather.
I don't think its a nautical term though.
All this time I thought they were two different phrases with different meanings.
