I see a lot about Kindle on the internet these days. What actually is it and does it have to be downloaded?

the basic Kindle is an e-reader; you download books onto it to read.
If you have a Tablet you can download the Kindle App and it does exactly the same ie you can read ebooks.

Thanks. I hadn't realised its purpose, but am not at all sure I would want to sit reading books on a computer screen.
Everybody says that until they try it. They're great and take up a lot less space when your out and about.
my OH has one and loves it. Good for holidays too as you don't have to take a pile of books with you.
my kindle is not much bigger than a paperback, 117mm x179mm. Its really easy to handle.
I never thought I would take to it as I love the feel of real books, but its great.
Have a look at the many alternatives such as the Kobo or a tablet - you can't download library books on to a Kindle. I download at least 9 books a month from my library - all free.

Sounds interesting thank you, but as I don't have a tablet to carry around there doesn't seem much point.
incidentally, it's not exactly a computer screen, as it doesn't have its own light, and you can increase the type size if y ou wish.
In a house fire I would rescue my Kindle above any other inanimate obect- I love it.
If you have a smart phone you can download an app for that too, I have the kindle app on my Samsung S3.
my kindle isnt a tablet which has lots more functions. Its just an e-reader, just for books. Its also solving my lack of bookshelf problem, the shelves are already stuffed full :-(
You can also download Kobo apps to your tablet, smartphone, pc.
