Holiday in the Canaries?

Where would you recommend my husband and I go for a week in March, preferably in the Canaries? We are 50+, want somewhere quiet in the daytime (and when we are in bed), around a pool and near the beach, and definitely with loads of shops (for me) and bars (for him) at night. Not an Ayia Napa type place though !!

In Tenerife there are two towns about 2 miles apart at the southern end of the island. Las Americas is used mainly by younger people. Los Cristianos is a little quieter, although not so much as it was ten years ago. There are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. You can get a ferry from there to the small island of La Gomera, or visit the island's capital, Santa Cruz by hire car or public transport.

Corralejo in fuertventura is lovely. We stayed in a Rui hotel and it was really good - highly recommend it!

My experience of the canaries are that both Fuengerola and Lanzarote are prone to lots of wind, and although still warm and sunny does have its drawbacks unless you enjoy wind sports. I have spent several holidays at the Parque Don Hose self catering apartments in Costa Del Solencio, between the airport and Las Americas. Not high standard but more than adequate and costs under 400 pounds for the fortnight.

have been both to los christianos and corralejo - los christianos now v. commercial -like a mini americas. corralejo much much quiter - depends what you like i suppose. p.s. gigantes in tenerfie really nice aswell.

i would seriously recommend los gigantes in tenerife. i'm only 20 but i went there with my mum and dad when i was 17 and really enjoyed it. they now go back every year with another couple and are in their early 50s. its a nice quiet town (but not full of OAPs) with nice bars and restaurants. i'm not sure what the beach is like though.

I agree with ahar with regards to Los Gigantes; it's a really lovely place (or was last time we were there). There aren't that many shops though. There is a beach which has the typical black sand of Tenerife; takes a bit of getting used to. The Marina is good for the evening and eating out. I have noticed that Expedia do a good priced package to Tamaimo Tropical apartments. We haven't been for some years, but we used to take the children when they were you and we all had a good time. It's worth hiring a car in Tenerife and driving to El Teide (the top of the volcano) and up to the north of the island. Masca is a fascinating place on the west side of the island (if you enjoy an exciting drive round numerous hairpins!) Have a great time!!

Torviscas area of Tenerife is the best. We are 50+ and go every winter,it is quiet but there is a lovely shopping area with lots of shops and retaurants nearby. Lovely hotels and self catering apartments too.
