02 Ford Mondeo Auto-Electrical Fault.

I seem to have a severe electrical fault, can anybody help please?
Whilst driving smoothly along the fuel warning light appeared, ( I still had 1/4 of a tank), also the speedometer stopped operating. Soon after, the engine started to misfire dramatically. I managed to get it to a garage but the fitter, (not an expert on auto electrics), was stumped. Pretty soon the engine starting revving at 20,000 revs and only dropped slightly when I put my foot underneath the throttle and lifted the pedal. I managed to drive home virtually on the clutch alone. can anyone please offer some advice. Many thanks.

number of reasons, faulty speed sensor ? ideally it needs going on a diagnostic system.

thanks chas,3 and bright spark, I think I should mean 2,000 revs, does that sound more realistic? anyway there was a lot!!

Just a surgestion, check the connections on the Battery Starter / Earth.
