What is an ultrasound test used for?

Help to monitor the growth of an unborn child, and check for abnormalities. An ultrasound scan is routine for pregnant women.
Detect abnormalities of heart structures such as the heart valves. (An ultrasound scan of the heart is called an echocardiogram.)

They do it when they have found a lump and want to see if it`s solid or fluid filled.

Any worry at this stage though understandable is not needed, hopefully the scan will reveal something benign. Fingers crossed.

I dont know if its of any help fgt but I've had to have ultra sound scans after my last two or three mammograms as I have very cystic breasts. The scans were done immediately after the mammograms and I was told the result there and then and the cysts aspirated.

i recently had a breast lump and had to have an ultrasound scan on it. It was to see if any further investigation or treatment needed to be done

I've had ultrasound scans both times when lumps (both times harmless) were found.

I was told that it can be used as mammograms don't show things up as well in younger denser breasts (from what I remember).

I had a fine needle biopsy both times on the day too, one by the breast surgeon in the clinic, the other while I was having my ultrasound.
