Have just made this and I have to say it looks and smells delicious. Also made the Madeira sauce to go with it and had to stop myself from eating the entire pot of it, it's soooo tasty.
Just a couple of things...I stupidly only used one layer of fillo, it's just about held together but in future Ill use double.
The sauce is made without mushrooms, mainly because I used them all up in the strudel..doh..but to be honest I don't think they could have made it any tastier. Oh, and I used pale sherry as I don't have any Madeira.
10/10 Eccles, this would be great for vegetarians on Christmas day, or anyone else for that matter, I'd happily have it instead of turkey.
Am making sainsburys creamy red lentil moussaka next week, if it's half as good as this strudel then it could be another vegetarian option.
I've just spotted this and am running around my living room with my jersey over my head in the style of premiere ship footballers........ I feel very happy that you are going to tuck into a scrummy meal :-)
The other thing I forgot to mention is I couldn't get mushroom stock cubes so used knorr stockpot beef flavour, it's truly the most delicious sauce I've ever had. And I couldn't be bothered removing the stalks from the spinach, it all wilted down anyway.
Just enjoying a margarita as an aperitif...and smiling at the thought of Eccles wrestling her jumper :)
Many thanks Eccles, truly a winning recipe.
