Porting mobile phone number from one network to another .....

Has anyone any experience of doing this - how exactly does it work?
I'm on a sim-only plan and unless my current provider (Three) can match the deal that I've just found (new deal includes a phone and is not sim-only), then I'm going to be switching to Vodafone.
I've just had 5000 business cards printed with my mobile number on, so I need to keeep my current number.
I know that I'll get a PAC from Three and I'll prob have to give 30 days notice, which will prob mean I'll have 2 contracts running temporarily.
How does it work - will the number just switch over when my 30 days notice are up, or will it switch over when I give my new network the PAC?

good afternoon.

after you give your PAC to the new network, keep using the old phone until one day (within a few weeks) it will not work .. you will then find that the new phone has been activated.

i have switched suppliers three times in the past seven years.

I've just done the same thing moving from Talkmobile to Vodafone. Gave the PAC to vodafone and the number was transferred over within 2 days. You are correct about having 2 contracts for a few weeks, but the old 3 phone will no longer work as it will have no number associated with it.
