Whole Class Detentions

My daughter was crying this morning not wanting to go to school, one of her teachers (lesson is today) keeps threatening the whole class with a detention because of a handful of pupils that keep talking. She doesn't want me to ring the school (I am ringing) incase it causes problems for her but I'm don't see why she should be punished for something other kids are doing.

Any teachers/exteachers on here that see the merits of whole class detentions cos from where I'm sitting all I see are a bunch of kids being punished for nothing.

Rocky...you do whatever you think is best for your daughter...if you do contact the school start with simply asking what the policy is on detentions and whole class detentions. Take it from there.

You will hear many times that this is a way of learning that life is not fair. I know it's not but knowing has never made me sit back and accept unfairness. I see nothing wrong in trying to make life fair......

I got caught by class detentions a number of times, and always hated it. I still don't fully see the logic behind it. Perhaps the idea is to encourage children to remember that their actions can have consequences not just for themselves but also for others around them who may be innocent. But I don't think that lesson is really learned. On the other hand it's a common practice among schools so there's little to be gained by ringing the school anyway. Sorry.

Oh, Jim!...Have I taught you nothing yet? If you have a sense of justice and fairness you make a stand even if you can't change things because everyone else is still sitting and accepting.

I know now, as I did fifty years ago, that I won't ban the bomb or feed the world....but I keep trying....☺

My own response was to go along to them, always, and show that I supported the teacher's authority. I'm such a rebel...

Jim....There are some teachers whose authority it would be dangerous to support......

I'm sure there are... but I discovered that only later. When I was 12, 13, 14, I figured it was a reasonable assumption that the teachers knew what they were doing and I didn't. I became a bit less idealistic later, when I spent my maths classes twiddling my thumbs and eating lunch and could start paying attention to how the teacher was teaching rather than what was being taught.
