thanks for all the answers
Glad to help.
I'm not sure I understand how 'mourners' is the answer for 27a- I don't get the 'by debt we hear' part
I went with mourners (albeit with a bundle of ?'s) because they're left in distress by a death which vaguely sounds like debt.
Me too
Yes, I wondered if debt was supposed to sound like 'dead' but it seems weak.
I also wondered if distress was something to do with a hair cut. Distress also means "the seizure and holding of property as security for payment of or in satisfaction of a debt, claim, etc.; distraint", but I can't link that to mourners
Do we have any other letters for 27a other than the M and R?
As the poster has given thanks for the answers I presume mourners fitted in the crossword.By the way what has happened to all the avatars?
wonder if in the Irish brogue 'debt' sounds like 'death'?
I think you're right Mamyalynne, if RTE is an Irish version of Radio Times. I wonder if the clues differ from those in the RT?
RTE guide is Radio Telifis Eireann, nothing to do with Radio Times, crosswords are different (Radio Times clues are much easier to understand) some of the clues in RTE are corny. I am still trying to finish Mondays issue No 46.
Good luck to those doing both crosswords
