Why, as you get older, do your eyes water in chilly weather and wind. I have just walked home from work and now look like a panda because my eyeshave watered so much and my mascara has run. I know that waterproof mascara, or no mascara at all, will work but why does this happen?
My eyes run so much that the top of my cheeks become sore. Is there anything I can do to protect my eyes a bit??

You don't fancy a helmet then Till?
Question Author
only if you buy me a bike to go with it, Shoota and teach me how to ride it.
Erm....I'll just pick you up in the limo methinks...
Question Author
okey dokey, Shoota.
Tilly you are suffering from 'dry eyes' syndrome..silly as it sounds your eyes will water profusely when outside - but only my right eye does weirdly enough, I sympathize with you as Ive suffered for the last year now, it came on suddenly..I use eye drops with Hypromellose in them and they really help.
My eyes have always watered when in the wind from a very young child ! ..am I odd ?
Question Author
I don't know, popple. I don't think so. I'm not aware that my eyes feel dry when i'm indoors, like now for example.
No your eyes dont feel dry as such, perhaps slightly sore or irritated like you sometimes have something in them, also there may be a mild burning sensation...and the eyes over compensate for this by over watering.
Question Author
I'll get some hypromellose then Popple and see if it's any good.
I have really dry eyes, I try and hide mine with a hat with a peak (velvet cap), bulky snood and my glasses when out.
I know what you mean Eve, i find it embarrassing as I love walking and I walk a lot to keep fit whenever I can but my face looks a mess through constant streaming tears, looks like I've been bawling my head off ! :(
It's even more embarassing when you're a bloke, trying to do your rugged outdoors type walk, down the beach and keep having to wipe your eyes clear.

The dry eyes comes with the type of CFS I've got and the walking is supposed to combat the fatigue, so there's no way to escape it. :-/

Question Author
I walk a lot, too. Not only do my eyes stream but my nose runs as well.
My eyes have always done this, I'm 34.
does your nose run? Do your feet smell?

Maybe you're built upside down.
I have the same problem, and it gets pretty cold over here. I wear a scarf, and wrap one end of it loosely around the lower half of my face. The warm air from my mouth is deflected up towards my eyes and really cuts down on the watering.
I should mention that one drawback is that if you wear glasses, the air from your mouth condenses on the inside of them. In fact, on really COLD days, it freezes!
Question Author
Blimey, stewey. It's bad enough when your glasses steam up. Frozen glasses?
Always carry a hankie with you to wipe them before they freeze:) Anyway, that sort of proves that the warm air from you mouth and nose is actually rising because of the scarf: try it, Tilly.
Question Author
I will, stewey. That's a much better option than walking around with a motorbike helmet on my head, sounding like Darth Vader. Thanks for the tip.
