Dimmer Switch Problem

I've got a metal dimmer switch in the kitchen with 2 knobs on, each controlling a set of 4 lamps using 35mm halogen bulbs (gu10). Turned one switch on yesterday and there was a bang and all lights went out in the house and sparks came from the dimmer switch.
I turned the switch back on for the lights in the fuse box and all lights in the house work bar the 4 that are controlled by this one dimmer. Is the switch likely to need replacing? The lights controlled by the knob next to it are also fine. Is it safe to use these lights or should I avoid using the switch altogether?

I had this problem in my lounge. Yes, a new switch is needed IMO.

Unless you really need the dimmer swap it for a normal switch.Most dimmers these days are rubbish.

Surprised if the "does it need replacing" question is a serious one. Bang, sparks, circuit breakers went, no longer works.

The other lights seem as if they are using a different isolated circuit, as they seem unaffected, and so I'd be ok using them on a temporary basis, but I'd not waste any time getting the whole thing replaced were I in your shoes.
