I've often wondered this myself and can only assume that they wait for the wind and then launch themselves off and let the breeze carry them. We have a side pathway to our house and sometimes when I go along it first thing in the morning and see a marvellous web strung right across the path that a poor hardworking spider has spent all night creating, I crouch down and crawl under it because I can't bear to destroy it and send it right back to square one.(And probably deprive it of the chance to catch its lunch in the bargain). How crazy is that?
