Yesterday, I did a big shop at Sainsbury's and the shop assistant told me it was his first day after I'd said, 'Are you new?' He seemed a bit flustered and unsure of himself. He also said, 'There are a lot of new starters today. We are here until after the New Year.' Anyway, my bill came to £130 approx and I duly paid and came home.

When I checked my bill, over a cup of tea, there were four mistakes on it and I had been overcharged by at least £20. I highlighted all the errors and went back to the shop.
No problems or questions, the money was returned to my card without any quibbles..

Just a word of warning to everyone, really. Lots of seasonal staff about.

Mistakes with offers?
Ooh I never check my till receipts ;-( Surely everything is scanned though, how did he make these mistakes?
Were they his mistakes? How? What did he do?
I doubt the mistakes are anything to do with the new recruits. More likely all the extra stock being brought in and the tills not being updated properly.
Ive noticed this, although no mistakes up to now.
It is obviously common in the retail and services sectors to increase workforce. However the amount of time and training invested in them for a fixed term period of several weeks will be minimal

No, ummmm. He had scanned things twice or three times. For example, I had bought two boxes of Fosters lager and had been charged for three, one box of tissues and had been charged for two. Those kinds of mistakes. It was because he was nervous, I think.

All the offers were fine. It was just the lad being unsure of himself, I reckon.
I find it strange a new employee was put on the tills on their first day.
Question Author
He had had two days training, he told me that. He meant it was his first day without being supervised.
Thanks for the warning Tilly, a lot of seasonal staff have started at our Sainsbury's as well

For my next big shop, I'll find one of the old timers. However, I won't be served by the one who has dandruff on her shoulders. Yeuk.
how can you be over charged when its all scanned ? he must have scanned things twice, but cant see that happening,
Question Author
That's the point, ivor. That's what he did.
inadequate training,
Often I have noticed that at the first time of scanning the till doesn't go "ping" to show it has scanned ok and so the cashier does it again, maybe that is how it got scanned twice? Just a thought .......
