Why No British Classical Greats?

Ok, there are some works of holst, Elgar, Williams and Britten that are exceptional but nothing to compare to the greats of European classical music.

In all the other arts we are up there. Why not classical music?

you have named 4, and to be perfectly honest, i couldn't name more than say 10 classical comp-osers anyway. $ out of 10 seems a lot to me! Or maybe i'm just a little englander?

Shoota, what you referred to is beautiful. My own funeral will last about three hours, if my executors will fork out for a small orchestra and a soprano for all the works I liked ! They may settle for one or two works, but if Dido's lament is one (above) that will do. Should be cheap enough if the funeral is in term time. Cambridge University is just down the road and they have musicians in every college and singers to match. They'll perform for a few pints of beer !

There was a superb performance of Walton's First Symphony on R3 last night. His London Symphony is also quite exceptional as is the Cello Concerto. The choral and orchestral "Belshazzer's Feast" is also wonderful.
Quality is not an issue with British Classical Repertoire, its quantity I guess.

Love that shoota. having sung in both Byrd's and Mozart's Ave Verum, would be hard to decide which one was most enjoyable
