Can anyone offer me guidance as what to ask for when visiting the Public Archives. I have traced my relatives back to the early 1800's, late 1700's with 'Ancestry', but think I need to venture away from the computer now. I live very near to London, so it is no trouble to visit the Archives at Kew etc.
I just need some help in how to know what to ask for.

Never done so myself, but I'd have thought the staff there would get this sort of request fairly often and may be prepared to show you the basics of searching the records.
It helps if you have some specific questions that need answers. For example, I have an ancestor that worked in a London brewery. I have his address but would like to know which brewery and what his actual job was. From that the staff would be able to help me find the sources of information most likely to be useful.
I know the London postal museum and even our local records office produce research guides so it may be worth checking with archive staff or websites to see if they have anything similar.
Dotty is the expert....dhawkes......she's brilliant at the genealogy stuff !
There isn't a great deal at Kew that will help you with most of the research you need, it is more likely you need the county archive where all parish records, registers, deeds, wills , manoral and quarter session records are kept. What county are you? or what county would you need to research in?
Kew is good for immigration, naturalisation, military, occupational business etc,
Would Kew have access to my fathers service record Dot? (He survived the war.)
It's more likely it is already online on ancestry shoota. email me the details and i'll have a look ([email protected]) just his name, date of birth and possible address/birthplace should do
Thanks sweetie x
