Commercially grown birdseed.

So much seed is grown commercially for us to feed wild birds in our garden , but how do they keep the birds from eating it before it is harvested?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I think logman is essentially correct, but, additionally, many seeds used as bird food are not eaten by many birds in the wild... by that I mean, one of the primary sources of wild bird food here in the U.S. are sunflowers. In the wild, they are eaten by only a few varieties of birds, but once shelled and often chipped, they are appreciated by many species. Same holds true with other types of seeds...
