It is another name for the Devil, Satan. Not sure of the exact origin of the term....
There are several references to Beelzebub in the Bible. Matthew 10 v 25 Matthew 12 v 24 Mark 3 v 22 Luke 11 v 15 & v 27 LUKE 11 V 18 & 19 Just in case you think so I am not a religious nut I just looked up a concordance.
it MEANS 'lord of the (flies) or (higher dwelling) 2nd in line to Satan - (look in Brewers') :-)
Beelzebub comes from the Hebrew Baal, meaning 'lord, husband'. It is the name of an early Canaanite god. Bul is the Hebrew word for 'house, high place, temple'. Beelzebul means 'god of the high place'. But the Jews may have purposely corrupted Beelzebul, as a sign of their disgust, into Beelzebub, meaning 'Lord of the flies' or 'god of filth'. By Jesus' day Beelzebub had become the popular name for Satan, the prince of demons.
