A quick google brings up a suggestion in the Telegraph here of 25,000 cars out of 1.2 million.

As said, for the last 10 years the '' Tax Disc'' has been useless, the only valid way to check if a vehicle is legal is the DVLA database. The police do not look at tax disks as it is pointless , they just put the reg no into the computer which instantly says if the car is legal or not. Let us hope that we can save some money by making redundant the people at DVLA that used to issue the useless 'tax disc'.
