Shouldn't a road tax be based on how much 'road ' you use. There was a time when I did over 30k miles a year and I paid the same tax as my elderly, and disabled customers who only did 1k.

ANPR doesn't work if an untaxed car is parked in the middle of a long row of parked cars - the passing police car won't pick up the registration number.

Similarly the passing police car won't notice an out of date tax disc, hc.

Anyway, if you don't SORN your car you should get posted a fine if you don't tax it now.

If it's true that 25% of cars on the road are uninsured it does not say much for all the ANPR and other police efforts does it. Is this just another example of us being told that a "brilliant,dynamic,cost effective, wonderful improvement etc etc , is in reality just another crock of sh*t.

A quick google brings up a suggestion in the Telegraph here of 25,000 cars out of 1.2 million.

As said, for the last 10 years the '' Tax Disc'' has been useless, the only valid way to check if a vehicle is legal is the DVLA database. The police do not look at tax disks as it is pointless , they just put the reg no into the computer which instantly says if the car is legal or not. Let us hope that we can save some money by making redundant the people at DVLA that used to issue the useless 'tax disc'.

You are absolutely right TCL, I completely misread the article. It is quite hard to work out what was being said.

It actually proves that the figures are shockingly high, but I still find the 25% figure hard to believe.
