Secrets Of The Discount Stores
38 Answers
Anyone else watch this? I am obviously a numpty as it never occurred to me that 'brands' would make sub-standard goods to sell cheaply in discount stores. (I bought two pairs of Kickers that turned out to be broccoli (one from TXMaxx for a knock-down price and one from Sports Direct at full Kickers price) needless to say, I have just sent Kickers an email to ask if they produce different standard goods for these stores), makes you think though.

I do try to buy quality shoes and get Sketchers and Hush puppies from online discounted stores but I've not had a problem with them so far. I wouldn't deliberately do labels in clothes, I don't see why I should pay to do their advertising for them. Stupid people such as the girl they spoke to last night who would pay £30 more for exactly the same item just because it had a logo are asking to get ripped off.
I watched a documentary a few months ago - Poundland? 99p shops? That sort of thing anyway, and the MD said that big brands were happy to supply smaller bottles just for them so they could sell that at £1 (or 99p) so in reality there was often no real saving eg. Tesco sells 200 ml of shampoo for £2, Poundland sells 100ml for £1 often in the same size bottle with the appropriate labelling.
The justification was the poor people can't afford to shell out £2 a time for shampoo.

We had a plumber in to look at an electric shower we'd had installed, by someone else, a year earlier, it was a well known brand, purchased from a major DIY store, think 2 letters. The plumber brought in the identical shower to show us that the internal fittings were superior to those in the one from the DIY store. Apparently, a cheaper version is made to be sold at a discounted price in the big stores.
Everyone is commenting on TKMaxx being like a jumble sale. The one down here must be an exception. Its on two floors, and always tidy...and busy. Maybe management is the problem? I've bought loads there...and have never had any problems with quality. I too assumed they dealt in end of lines...and stuff from America. They've got the best selection of housewares at good prices. I buy all my pots and pans there.
