Inflamed Gums, Very Sore. No Pain In Teeth

i was at dentist today after having pain in teeth, but after xray today it showed no infection . though my gums have receeded and swollen up, now in in bad pain. i asked him to give me something for it but he gave me colgate flouride toothpaste and amoxicillan antibiotics.

what could be causing this pain, anyone else had this ?

and what would best pain killer be to buy ?

Gingivitis.
I suffer from it a lot, the only thing i've found that eases it and shortens flare ups is using Corsodyl daily mouthwash twice daily. I was at the dentists yesterday and she was quite pleased with the colour and state of my gums for once :)

By the way, Gingivitis is made worse by smoking (so give up now if you smoke) and some prescription medications.

Strange to be given antibiotics if there was no infection....but I'm not a dentist!

Why is he giving you antibiotics if there's no infection? Have you tried the usual paracetamol and ibuprofen?

The infection will be in the gums, not the teeth.

If the gums are receded and swollen they are likely infected, believe me I know as I have spent the last 35 years with gum and tooth problems, to the point where I have severe bone loss in my upper and lower jaws and my teeth are practically falling out. One was so loose that when they extracted it the other week there was no blood or pain at all, it was barely hanging in there. lol.

My wife had a similar problem about 6 weeks ago - she could hardly open her mouth for the pain. Dentist gave her a thorough check and X-ray and could see no obvious cause for the pain ie, no abcess etc. He gave her two different antibiotics and the pain steadily decreased over the following couple of weeks and finally disappeared. We always use aspirin for pain control but if you have a preferred favourite that will do just as well. Remember to finish the course of the antibiotics.

Get some interdental brushes that clean inbetween your teeth and a good mouth wash. Brushing alone, is not enough to keep plaque at bay.

Due to brushing hard your gums also becomes swollen but i think it was due to infection but it was not happened to you. So for getting relief from this put a cotton ball dipped in the eucalyptus oil at the swollen place.

theres a sore lump up at top of my gums near roof of mouth and cheekbone, im on penicillan now 2 days without relief, hope its not something serious

Are you on penicillin or amoxycillin - you shouldn't be on both? You have to give it a couple of days for antibiotics to start to work.

Sounds like an apical abscess........no big deal.

Yes one can take penicillin with amoxycilin, but there is little or no advantage.

sorry i should have said amoxycillan . hurts like hell and hoping it will go away soon, im taking 500mg ibrufen too for inflamation but im surprised my dentist didnt know about this at time, as i say he took xray but showed no infection inside tooth area, it feels as if its in my cheekbone .
