Scumbags - keep an eye on ebay for your stuff, especially the lambrettta, it'll be relatively easy to spot and you never know, the thieves might be stupid enough to try selling it on there. If you spot anything ring the police.
The Insurance companies are the biggest bunch of thieves ever, I have no faith in them. We had a flood a few years ago, ruined a carpet and some clothes. But they wouldn't cough up for the 2year old carpet and the clothes just for dry cleaning! Yesterday we bought a new car, they want to charge us £50 to alter the details on our insurance, to have the new registration plates put on, and then when we have our Cherished plate transferred to our new car, to alter the registration again.
Admin fee, Gran, all insurance companies do that. Ours was only £15 though.

We had a flood (burst tank in the attic, stop cock out side the house broken!) so had water raining down for over an hour.

Insurance company told us to fix it and send them the invoice and they'd send a loss adjuster round to inspect the damage.

They supplied an industrial dehumidifier, took meter readings before they installed it, and came back to test the walls. After 7 days the deemed that the walls will need re-plastering.

They paid to have the walls and ceilings re-plastered and paid for a new carpet. Then they came back round to read the meter and sent us a cheque for the amount of electricity the dehumidifier used.

I think it's pot luck with insurance...
Pot luck indeed. Ours was a burst water pipe from the attic one Boxing Day, water everywhere and not a plumber in sight. They didn't even send anyone round to inspect the carpet or the decor. I cancelled the insurance shortly after that.
AskYour Gran you should have buildings insurance for the rare but ruinous events like the house burns down....
agree Hymie

FF - my brother was flooded and said the pipe was fractured
and the loss adjuster said - you are covered for leaks and not fractures.

(you asked for p+ssy remarks made in refusing claims)

I ended up suing a clerk for professional negligence (small claim) when she tried the inevitable run-around.

My mother - we will settle your claim if your dont claim for the bridge - (no not her teeth the bridge across a stream). Insurance agent said she was at least 50% underinsured.

My experience is Hymie's.
Did you buy through an insurance broker, who would have taken the time to explain what cover you did or didn't have? Or did you go through an internet site to get the cheapest price, with the gaps left unexplained?
