Menieres Disease

Last weekend I had a very bad bout of the above - lasted for about 48 hours. Now I have finally googled it and like everything else - there is loads about it. However, there is a device called Meniett device which cost £2,000 (no way could I think about that) because there may be no guarantee.

Anyway goes on to search and found that the Menieres can last 5-12 years but then it "burns" itself. Can anybody please tell me what burns out. I don't understand that bit.

When my consultant put the probe into my ear about 2-3 years ago she must have been literally seconds at the ear - oh you have Menieres - does anybody know what did she see? Grateful for any replies. Conne

I have Menieres and it is usually diagnosed by default....you have these symptoms (increasing deafness in affected ear, severe dizzy spells ie vertigo and tinnitus in affected ear. They check for serious conditions (I had an MRI of head) and if they don't find any "problem" causing the symptoms...they put it down to Menieres.
"Burns itself out" ....usually after some years the symptoms become less frequent and less severe and even stop - but not until the affected ear is left more or less deaf.
Some unlucky souls develop it in their other ear, too.
Excellent post by gingebee.

One cannot diagnose Menieres Disease by looking into the ear.

Never heard of Meniett device and i am not going to Google it as it is nonsense.
The Meniett is sometimes available on the NHS, Conne. Might be worth asking your doctor.

well Sqad - this consultant confirmed it within seconds - first of all before going to see her - a man put headphones on me and asked me to repeat 10 words that the person on the mike was saying. I did not get one correct. Anyway I couldn't believe how quick she made that diagnosis also told me I was a very good candidate for a cochlear implant. Conne
Thanks for answers again - what is it menieres BURNS out.

I will have mine 3 years next January.
Ginge has explained 'burns out', i.e. the symptoms lessen over time.
Ah!......you are now telling a different story.

The diagnosis of Menieres Disease was made on Audiometry (hearing tests) and Poor Speech discriminating tests.....diagnostic of Menieres disease.
You Consultant had the tests confirming the diagnosis BEFORE he looked into your ear.

"Burn out" is a term that the medical profession use, to denote cessation of symptoms.

well I just hope cessation comes quickly.
I really sympathise with you, but unfortunately cant be of help as I am in the same position. Had a really bad attack a few weeks ago and one of my ears is still not back to normal, I think mine was caused by stress and have heard it can trigger an attack. One positive thing though. I read somewhere yesterday that they have found a cure for it, but I simply cannot remember where I saw it. Keep your chin up, good luck. Maggie
I had all sorts of tests, lots of water in my ears and probes on my head and watching my eye movements and such as well as the hearing tests and MRI to rule out other stuff.

I know two other people with Menieres whose symptoms haven't lessened over time, if anything they have got worse. I met another one who wasn't diagnosed that long ago so not sure - quite "exciting" as it's so unusual to meet other people with it who know what it's like, especially of a younger age.

I've never heard of the Meniett thing though haven't seen a consultant in a while, figured not much else could be done as meds the same etc... unless I had more frequent drop attacks, vertigo etc... and when I felt my hearing needed re-checking. I'm back to ENT in January. I'm interested to hear about anything good!

glenbar could you look up that test please. Ta Conne
I have searched and searched, but am blowed if I can find it. My problem is that since the bout a few weeks ago my ears have been dreadful and I am soooooooooo disorientated which doesn't help. Will keep looking and thinking though. Sorry
