Does it work? When my computer was first set up I was advised to install Malwarebytes.
This seemed to work fine at first for the first year as only a few objects were found and these were supposed to have been deleted. I now wonder if they were as over the last 12 months they increased to about 200.
Yesterday when I clicked on it showed 993 objects which I deleted. I could
not believe it so I immediately ran other check which showed 991. How could it happen in such a short space of time.
I am hoping some kind person out there could please advise what to do
As a senior citizen of 87 I am not very experienced on computers so I would appreciate a simple way to solve this problem. Thank you in advance.
The objects detected were all headed PUP optional etc

When the scan has completed are you selecting and removing the items or just clicking on finish/exit (or whatever the buttonis)?

Thank you for your reply. Yes I am clicking and removing the items first
PUP=Potentially Unwanted Program

I have a similar scanning tool which warns the user that it identifies McAfee, Kaspersky (antivirus products) as PUPs. Automatic deletion of products the user has paid for would antagonise customers, hence the deletion step is made optional.

This is where your non-computer-savvy state is causing you a problem. 991 items is an enormous list but it sounds like you will have to work your way through it, marking any program you do not recall installing yourself and then tellin Malware bytes to delete it.

This task would try the patience of someone half your age, so maybe chip away at it, 50 items per day until they're all gone.

With over 900 'nasties' on your computer, it must have been running very slowly indeed. Congratulate yourself for having the wisdom to install Malwarebytes. It does a remarkably good job...but...it needs to be run fairly frequently. Weekly would be preferable, since there seems to be a proliferation of this kind of nastiness recently.

My own safeguards are all in place, but they fail to detect a lot of the rubbish which quickly accumulates. I regularly delete about 12 objects which Malwarebytes detects, and that's weekly.

Keep at it, Ironmonger. Nil Illegitimus Carborundum, eh?

As discussed above, you may actually want any "PUP" it finds. It's just that Malwarebytes thinks it could be used to your disadvantage if it was installed surreptitiously. But at almost a thousand of them one wonders what you have installed. PUPs need not be running though, they may just be on the hard drive waiting to be run when asked; so speed might not be affected anyway.

Thank you whiskeyron and Old Geezer .Have made a note of your replies and will check them out.

Have just tried out Malwarebytes again and it is now 990
-- answer removed --
unusual to have that many and then reoccuring
Try reinstalling it .You also need other scanners like spybot search destroy as one scanner is not enough
Although Malware Bytes is very program it can't detect every infection as the malware writers are always changing the way they write these infections and it takes time to catch up with them. Having said this I use a paid program $ 40.00 US in conjunction with Malware Bytes called SPY HUNTER 4 which tends to clean out a lot of the hidden infections especially tracking cookies which make out that they are good but are not. You will continue to get PUP infections unless you use both of these programs together.

Thank you all for your help.
I have now managed to get in touch with Malwarebytes and they are trying to sort this problem out. So far no good. In the meantime I have switched my browser from Internet to Firefox and everything is OK.
