Definitely plain flour. They dont want to be too heavy.

Plain flour for thin pancakes/crepes, self-raising for thick ones/Scotch pancakes.

agree with reddoggy , i prefer the thin ones , (you can have more of them )
the thick ones ,to me are not really pancakes are they ?

My father used to make a slightly thicker pancake batter and add pieces of fried bacon.Absolutely delicious with tomato ketchup!

Like lilac, I make delicious thin pancakes using self raising flour - yummy!

Hi Lilac - I didn't make any pancakes last night, as I'd been out all day shopping at Hobby Craft & Ikea in Milton Keynes with my daughter & was exhausted when I got back - plus the fact there's only Mr Smudge & me at home now & the Grandchildren weren't here.

I know the text books say to use plain flour, but I buy Homepride S/R flour & use it for all my pastry & batter too. The family & friends always compliment me on the mince pies at Christmas, so that can't be bad!

Yes beerbelly, thick ones ARE pancakes, scottish style. Whereas I don't think thin ones are really pancakes, they are crepes. lol
