What happened to Berni Inns? And in an attempt to dissuade funsters from making an allusion to Berni Inns being a person, and suggesting that 'He was the best opening batsman Yorkshire ever had' etc. ....... DON'T. They were dead popular in the 70s, but are they still about, or were they swallowed up by some other large restaurant chain?

They were brought up Whitbread's in 1990 and rebranded as Beefeaters. In 1998 Whitbreads decided that high-street prices were too excessive for restaurants and downsized selling 40 Beefeaters to a pub-chain. I believe that recently the remaining Beefeaters have been revamped and doing ok. Shame about the Berni's they used to do a lovely vegetable terraine.
but it's not the 70's it's 2003. might as well say what happened to Wimpy bars. It's the 21st century now times change people move on and take new programs on board. get yourself a bucket of kfc they got bigger jugs than Hooters apparently. :-)
You obviously dont live in Kent answerbok, we got millions of Wimpy's we have 2 in our local highstreet and every town around here has at least one. I was always under the impression that Berni became Harvesters not Beefeater ? all the ones I remeber that were Berni's as a kid are now Harvesters and not beefeaters.
In 1974 Beefeater was founded and in 1990 bought out Berni but since then has been a flop recently sold off alot of resturants with a 150 left they are introducing a new mordern menu.
i think after the great scampi shortage of 1976 the great berni inns went into decline, thus leaving many baskets standing empty.bring back the berni i say
