I have a 1961 landrover which i bought as a mess,so far i have replaced most of it over the last few years-but tried to keep it original looking. I have fitted an isuzu 2.5 non turbo which is superb, problem is that it has lots more grunt, but revs too much. I use it on the road a lot and would like any suggestions (cheap) as to get over the problem. a diff change to both axles has been suggested, but what would gear the highest, and where from.........?

Well, it depends on all sorts of things like what did you do for the gearbox when you changed the engine, did you keep the original gearbox and just mate it to the engine with an adaptor plate, if so it might be possible to change the transfer box for a higher ratio, Its probable that yours is 1.6-1 ratio and you might get a 1.4-1 from a later TDI or something or you could change both the diffs for a higer ratio.
This is a bit of a specialist subject for what is now an old vehicle, why don't you contact one of the Land Rover clubs or magazines such as http://www.landroverworld.co.uk/content/faqs.htm or http://www.landroverforums.com/ which will have people with the sort of knowledge you require.

You will probably need to do some research on diff ratios to find the right two to fit but what about the the overdrive unit available for series models? Only needs to work on the rear axle. You can also fit larger tyres and wheels to gear up more.

thanks stanleyman! have done as suggested- been after an overdrive but lots of dosh.....then met a guy locally who had one cheap, and rangerover diff. have fitted both and its unbeleiveable now, am getting 60 mph easily now at about 3000rpm, and the best bit is it does around 40 mpg -not bad for a near 2 ton,45 year old brick!
