cutting grass

i have recently moved house, the grass is rather long, would it be ok to cut it now or is it best to wait until the weather gets a bit warmer? Thanks in advance for your replies.

You should be able to cut it now. And put out some fertiliser, too.

Hi SEXY, Personally I'd wait a while til the weather warms up a bit more, as a heavy frost can make it turn yellow, having said that grass is about the most resiliant plant on the planet and will eventually recover. When you do decide to give it the first cut of the year,treat it gently at first, on a high setting. Good Luck..

Well, you've had two different answers and I guess either would be right because I've done both over the years. I just try and avoid mowing when frost is forecast and for the first cut of the year, put the mower blades on a high setting. As logman says, grass is very resilient and it will rarely let you down. Don't mow when the ground is wet and soggy though.

I cut mine about a month ago at work and it's fine.

As long as you don't scalp it and don't mow it when there's a frost on the ground or it's water logged, it will be fine.

I often find by giving the grass an early cut, it makes things a lot easier when the weather warms up

Letting it get longer will cause you trouble. It's harder to cut and gives a ragged look, requiring raking to get the lying-down grass to stand up and be cut again. I'd rather risk minor, temporary damage due to frost than the aggravation and hassle of cutting when the grass is too tall.

I'd cut it now. It will look rubbish for a few weeks but if you keep on top of it now it should start looking good by the summer.

Don't cut it too short yet though.
