I cannot access my Yahoo inbox - the system is down. Their advice is to visit @yahoomail on Twitter for updates.

Unfortunately I am not on Twitter - can any kind soul please tell me what the latest news is on fixing the problem?

Sorry, have just noticed the date on that yahoo page so their suggestion would be to contact them but before that you could try clearing your browser's cache and deleting yahoo cookies, if you haven't already done so.
