Are you sure it is set up as a UK / English keyboard. within Windows.

Different keyboards around the world have their letters in different places so Windows needs to know which country it is from, maybe it thinks it is a US keyboard.

In Windows XP go to the Control Panel, choose Regional and Language options, then the Languages tab, then in the Text Services and Input Languages area press the Detail button.

Make sure the keyboard is shown as United Kingdom. Delete any other language keyboards that are shown.

My Dads computer had the same problem. But insted of pressing shift+@ try pressing shift+2 this worked for my dads computer.
r4zorb4ck - that will be his regional input options as described by helpfulguy above

Have you tried pressing all the non a- z keys on the keyboard, and then doing them a second time holding down the shift key, then athird time with ALT GR held down?

Somewhere there you should find the @ sign.

I work a lot in different countries and sometimes have to resort to that to find the @ key.

Of course, the best thing to do is to change the country setting so that your keyboard mapping is correct, as others above have said.

An easier way, whatever keyboard you have, is to hold down ALT and type 64 on the keypad.

This works with any ASCII characters, so e.g ALT+156 gives you the pound sign.
