When someone on TV who is being interviewed starts saying ''you know'' I find myself counting how many times they repeat it.

I wouldn't say anything to anyone (as I wouldn't want to hurt their feelings ) and its like different accents - cant help it sometimes and I think it can be nerves. "To be fair" is used alot but individuals often grow up saying these words and its part of who they are and it can feel personal in how they converse.

Years ago did media training with others and it picks everything up but everybody had something they got clipped for (one person couldn't pace her words -too fast and she couldn't get it right). I only once had someone say something to me but I didn't react & I should have. I wasn't too keen on having a conversation with him again. Should have pretended to be deaf. I felt a little bit intimidated by his tone but didn't think I would until it happened.

My sister, has the habit of repeating herself and some words which defy understanding. Thingio is her cover all word which can be a person, a mountain or just about anything you care to imagine. A happy hour's chat on the 'phone has subject matter which can be covered in minutes
by friends.
But what the heck, its just nice to hear from her.
yes its just how people speak

people seem to write 'alot' a lot these days too, instead of 'a lot' ... alot is not a word ... but people just 'pick it up' from their surroundings... much like speech ...

At the moment lots of people seem to be starting every sentence with so. No idea why . I think it makes them sound as if they think you are simple and need things explaining! Or maybe people do think I am simple and it is just when they are talking to me they start their sentences with so.
