What Is This Bird?

The other day, a flock of birds descended onto a rowan tree outside our flat to eat the berries. They were about the size of a thrush, brownish/mottled in colour, had yellow striped heads and a flash of red on the side of their bodies. they had quite long pointed beaks.
I have tried looking on the internet and in my British Birds book but I can't see anything like them. Any ideas please?
