Hardly any sleep with terrible cramp in both legs. Have taken a paracetemol but it hasn't worked. What causes it? Is it because I wolfed down a load of Thornton's chocolate ginger last night? Is this my punishment for being a greedy pig?

Wish I was murraymints then I would at least have a cause for it. Have tried walking up and down the passage, made a cup of tea, rubbed both legs with vigour but nothing works.
There is no certainty about what causes cramp but it may be worse at this time of year because out vitamin D levels are lower.

If this is something you suffer frequently, try supplementing your vitamin D.

Thanks NoMercy, sometimes it is excruciating. Murraymints is the birthday baby, not NoMercy! Posts crossed.

Think I'll go and have a shower. Not much point in going back to bed.
Have heard that a small glass of tonic water before bed works starone. worth a try.
Star a good cure for cramp is Tonic water. It may sound strange, but it works. I promise you. I get cramp sometimes, and it works quite quickly every time. :o}
star I too suffer with night cramps and its horrible, GP prescribed quinine tablets which help, hubby who was a shiatsu practioner used to tell me to drink more water, bro-in-law who is in the medical profession was horrified I had been taking quinine tabs for a long time said they harm your liver [ or was it kidneys ? ]stop at once which I have done but now am back to the cramps practically every night.
\\\\I had been taking quinine tabs for a long time said they harm your liver [ or was it kidneys \\\\

No it is the heart........only if taken for a long term...years.

Tonic water contains quinine and is certainly worth a try but i am in favour of quinine sulphate tablets.

Happy Xmas starone.
I read on one of the Tonic water manufacturers that tonic water now contains such minuscule amounts of quinine that it will have absolutely no effect on anybodies health, good or bad!

But Hey, if it works I wont knock it! placebo effect maybe?

No I cant remember which site, this was a few months ago.

Starone, I went on to Simvastatin for a short while, the cramps in my legs were a killer every night, I stopped taking them, the cramps immediately stopped, I will never take them again. Dreadful things for causing cramps.
so what is the answer Sqad how do you stop night cramps and severe ones too, eve my toes stick out at angles and I cannot stand on that foot, which leaves me hopping around on t'other one , not a pretty sight.
i use calmagzinc tablets which work for me. the dose is three a day and they ate like housebricks but they do sort the problem.
Dee Sa.......wot wud i do?

I would go back on the quinine tablets sharpish.
The quinine tablets work for some, they don't really work for Carakeel. Some swear by bananas before bed.
Coming to this topic very late and I hesitate to give a positive suggestion, but very many years ago when I played rugby, and particularly during the "7 a side" season our trainer gave us salt before the game.

This seemed to be effective, but nowadays too much salt seems to be a bad thing. This perhaps was an old wife's tale, but it worked. Perhaps mind over matter.
Hope you are not taking Statins, main cause of leg muscle problems.
You said you had a load of chocolate ginger? 2 things will always give me leg cramps, not drinking enough water through the day and too much dark chocolate!
